- Summary of Talk:
- Although the hospital Emergency Department (ED) may not come to mind as a venue for end-of-life care, dying patients do frequently present to EDs in the final hours or days of life. In this presentation, Dr. Derse will examine the role of ethics and law in ED care at the end of life. He will describe the general consensus about end-of-life care in the ED, point out pitfalls in that consensus, and analyze current and emerging areas of controversy.
- Talk Objectives: Upon completion of this knowledge-based program, participants should be able to:
- Describe principles of law and ethics in end-of-life care in the ED.
- State the general consensus concerning law and ethics in end-of-life care in the ED.
- List areas of controversy in law and ethics in end-of-life care in the ED.
